FG Releases January–August 2026 Allowance for Non-Academic Staff in Federal Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government has released the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance to non-academic staff of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, covering the period from January to August 2026.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, announced the payment on Wednesday through the ministry’s official X handle, describing the development as part of efforts by the Federal Government to improve workers’ welfare and strengthen industrial harmony in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

According to the minister, the payment demonstrates the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to supporting workers and ensuring uninterrupted education delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

FG Releases Allowance for Non-Academic Staff

Alausa said the release of the allowance was aimed at addressing legitimate welfare concerns among non-academic staff while supporting stability in federal tertiary institutions.

“The release of the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance is a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, strengthening industrial harmony and supporting quality education delivery,” the minister said.

He noted that non-academic workers play an important role in the day-to-day administration and effective functioning of tertiary institutions across the country.

The minister added that their contributions were essential to maintaining stability within the education system and supporting Nigeria’s human capital development.

Payment Covers January to August 2026

The allowance covers eight months, from January to August 2026, and applies to non-academic staff working in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Alausa said the payment recognises the important contributions of both academic and non-academic employees to the smooth running of tertiary institutions.

“The release recognises the critical role of both academic and non-academic staff in maintaining the stability and effective functioning of tertiary institutions, which are vital to Nigeria’s human capital development,” he said.

FG Links Payment to Industrial Harmony

The Federal Government said the payment is part of broader measures designed to address workers’ welfare concerns and reduce the likelihood of disruptions to academic activities in tertiary institutions.

The development also follows the earlier commencement of payment of the Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) for academic staff.

The government has continued to engage relevant unions and stakeholders over outstanding welfare and employment-related issues affecting workers in the tertiary education sector.

Education Ministry Promises Further Engagement

The Minister of Education assured stakeholders that the Federal Government would continue discussions with unions, institutional leaders and other partners to resolve outstanding issues in the sector.

“The Federal Ministry of Education will continue engaging unions, institutional leaders and other partners to resolve outstanding issues and promote a stable, productive tertiary education system,” Alausa said.

He also commended workers, heads of institutions and unions for their patience and cooperation, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations.

According to the minister, the administration will continue implementing reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s education system and improving working conditions across federal tertiary institutions.

What the Payment Means for Non-Academic Staff

The release of the January–August 2026 allowance is expected to provide financial relief to non-academic employees across federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The Federal Government is also hoping that continued payment of agreed allowances and engagement with workers’ unions will contribute to greater industrial harmony and help minimise interruptions to academic activities.
