Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Portugal’s preliminary squad for next month’s Nations League matches, raising the possibility of his return to international football following a reported disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus.
A source within the Portuguese football federation (FPF) told AFP on Tuesday that the 41-year-old forward was being considered for the upcoming fixtures against Denmark and Wales on November 14 and 17, respectively.
An FPF spokesperson also confirmed reports that Ronaldo was in line for a return to the national team. However, the final squad is expected to be announced by Jesus on November 6.
Ronaldo’s Disagreement With Jorge Jesus
Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s national team camp abruptly on September 30 during the opening qualifiers for the Nations League, following a disagreement with Jesus over playing time and other issues.
In a social media post after leaving the camp, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner accused the coach of promising to give him playing time against Norway but failing to honour the agreement.
Ronaldo also claimed that Jesus had not mentioned during a press conference ahead of the Denmark match several points they had previously agreed upon.
Despite the disagreement, Ronaldo insisted that he had no intention of retiring from international football.
Portugal Suspends Ronaldo for 30 Days
The Portuguese football federation announced last week that Ronaldo had received a 30-day suspension for leaving the team camp.
The suspension was backdated, meaning he would be eligible to return by the end of the week, according to the report.
Ronaldo had apologised to supporters earlier in October and said he would accept whatever punishment the authorities imposed.
His inclusion in the preliminary squad suggests that a return could be possible, although his place in the final selection will depend on the squad announcement.
Portugal Advances in Nations League Without Ronaldo
Portugal have won all four of their Nations League matches, with three victories coming without Ronaldo, and secured qualification for the quarter-finals with two games remaining.
The team’s results mean the upcoming fixtures will provide another opportunity for the coaching staff to assess the squad ahead of the knockout stage.
Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer and record appearance-maker in men’s international football.
He made his Portugal debut in 2003 at the age of 18 and has remained one of the country’s most prominent football figures throughout his international career.
Ronaldo Hints at Possible End of Football Career
Despite the possibility of returning to the national team, Ronaldo has indicated that his playing career may be approaching its conclusion.
The Portugal captain has said that the current year will “probably” be his final year in football.
His potential return to the squad for the November fixtures could therefore attract considerable attention from supporters as Portugal continue their Nations League campaign.
For now, Ronaldo’s inclusion remains preliminary, with the final decision expected when Jesus announces his squad on November 6.
