California Governor Gavin Newsom has predicted that Democrats will regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 2026 midterm elections, saying such a result would mark the end of Donald Trump's presidency “as we know it.”
Newsom made the comments during an interview on September 23 following events linked to the United Nations General Assembly and New York Climate Week.
“We’re going to take back the House of Representatives. It’s a day of reckoning, a new day coming,” Newsom said, according to AFP.
He added that “Trump’s presidency, as we know it, ends in November.”
What Newsom Means By “Ends”
Newsom did not provide a detailed explanation of what he meant by saying Trump's presidency would end in November.
However, the midterm elections determine control of Congress rather than the presidency. If Democrats were to gain control of one or both chambers, they could use congressional powers to challenge or limit parts of the administration's agenda, although the president would continue to exercise substantial executive authority.
Newsom's statement is therefore a political prediction about the consequences of the November elections, rather than a claim that Trump would leave office before the end of his presidential term.
Newsom Links Climate Change to Cost of Living
During the interview, Newsom also discussed climate policy and argued that Democrats should connect climate issues to everyday economic concerns.
He pointed to the prices of products such as beef and coffee, as well as difficulties with home insurance and mortgages in areas affected by climate-related risks.
Newsom said climate policy should be discussed not only as an environmental issue but also in terms of economic and national-security concerns.
California's Climate Policies
Newsom presented California as an example of a state pursuing clean-energy policies while maintaining economic growth.
He said California had generated enough clean electricity to operate entirely on clean energy for part of the day on about 90 per cent of days in 2026.
His administration has also been involved in disputes with the Trump administration and congressional Republicans over federal efforts affecting California's environmental regulations.
Newsom Comments On 2028 Presidential Race
The California governor also discussed the possibility of a 2028 presidential race.
Newsom has previously said he would not run if former Vice President Kamala Harris entered the Democratic primary.
However, when discussing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Newsom did not rule out potentially competing against her for the Democratic nomination.
He described Ocasio-Cortez as a “generational talent” and rejected arguments that factors such as gender, age, religion or being from California should automatically prevent someone from winning a presidential nomination or election.
Newsom has not announced a 2028 presidential candidacy.
