The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the temporary shutdown of its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) amid the ongoing 2026 admission exercise into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
CAPS is the platform used to process admissions into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, making the disruption significant for institutions and candidates currently involved in the admission process.
JAMB Explains Reason For CAPS Shutdown
In a statement issued by its Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocols, Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB said the platform became unavailable due to technical challenges associated with its hosting arrangements.
The board said it had commenced discussions with the organisation responsible for hosting CAPS to identify the cause of the problem and restore the system.
JAMB acknowledged that the disruption occurred at an important stage of the admission exercise, when institutions are processing admission offers and candidates are checking their admission status.
According to the board, CAPS remains the central platform through which admissions into tertiary institutions across the country are processed.
Candidates Asked To Remain Patient
JAMB said it decided to inform the public about the situation to prevent candidates and institutions from speculating about the cause of the outage.
The board assured candidates, institutions and other stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to restore CAPS to full functionality within the shortest possible time.
It also apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary shutdown and urged users to remain patient while the technical issue is being addressed.
JAMB To Review The Disruption
Beyond restoring the platform, JAMB said it would review the circumstances surrounding the disruption after CAPS becomes operational again.
The review, according to the board, is intended to identify measures that could help prevent similar interruptions in the future.
JAMB emphasised the importance of CAPS to maintaining a transparent, orderly and coordinated admission process.
The board said it would provide further updates as efforts to restore the platform continue.
What Candidates Should Do
Candidates currently waiting for admission should avoid panic or relying on unverified information about the CAPS outage.
Those unable to access their admission status can try again once the platform is restored. Candidates should also monitor JAMB's official communication channels and their institution's admission portal for updates.
Candidates should be cautious of individuals asking for money while claiming they can restore CAPS access or guarantee admission during the disruption.
