Fuel price rises, deepens pressure on users

In today’s Nigerian newspaper review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with the surge in international crude oil prices, which have risen above $100 per barrel. The development is putting fresh pressure on petrol prices across Nigeria, with major oil marketers increasing pump prices and raising concerns for transporters, commuters, households, and businesses.

Another major story in Vanguard is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s landmark N2.15 trillion Initial Public Offering (IPO), which officially opens today.

The newspaper also reports that as primary and secondary schools reopen across the country today, parents and guardians are facing increased financial pressure, with many private schools raising their fees by between 30 and 40 per cent.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that the N144 billion Safe Schools Initiative has failed to completely ease security concerns as pupils return to classrooms across the country.

The Punch leads with the Federal Government’s plan to present the 2027 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly in September. The move is aimed at advancing Nigeria’s budget cycle, despite continued challenges with budget implementation and overlapping fiscal years.

Finally, The Nation reports that the two major opposition parties, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are struggling to match the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in terms of capacity to field candidates for National Assembly seats ahead of the January 16, 2027 elections.
