The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools from 2026 to 2028, following the completion of the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise.
The approved list covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1).
The ministry announced the release in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
Approved Textbooks Get Unique Tracking Codes
According to the ministry, each textbook approved under the exercise has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code.
The code is accompanied by important information about each textbook, including the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
The ministry said the new tracking system was introduced to make it easier to identify, monitor and account for approved instructional materials used in schools.
It explained that the Ranking/QR Tracking Code would strengthen the monitoring and control of approved textbooks and promote greater transparency in their selection, procurement and utilisation.
Why the Textbook List Took Time to Complete
The Federal Ministry of Education also explained that the process of assigning unique codes to each ranked textbook contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final list.
The ministry said the additional identification and tracking process was necessary to ensure that the approved textbooks could be properly monitored.
The exercise was conducted under the guidance of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad.
The final list was subsequently approved by the Minister of Education.
Second Phase to Cover More Classes
The ministry said the national textbook ranking exercise will be conducted in phases.
Following the completion of the first phase, preparations will begin for the second phase, which will cover textbooks for:
Primary 2
Primary 5
JSS 2
SS 2
The ministry said the same identification and tracking measures would be applied to textbooks covered under the subsequent phase.
Schools and Publishers Asked to Use Approved List
The Federal Ministry of Education urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to consult the official approved list when selecting and procuring textbooks for the affected classes.
The ministry also encouraged stakeholders to comply with the approved list in the provision and use of textbooks for the specified classes.
According to the ministry, the exercise is part of the Federal Government's efforts to improve the quality of instructional materials available to teachers and learners across the country.
Government Explains Importance of Textbook Ranking
The ministry said the exercise is intended to ensure that students and teachers have access to instructional materials that are quality-driven, relevant and aligned with the approved curriculum.
It also said the new tracking system would strengthen transparency and accountability in the provision and procurement of textbooks for Nigerian schools.
The approved list is expected to serve as a reference for schools and other education stakeholders when selecting textbooks for the classes covered by the first phase.
How to Access the 2026–2028 Approved Textbook List
The Federal Ministry of Education has made the complete 2026–2028 ranked and approved textbook list available, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each approved title.
Schools, publishers, parents, education authorities and other interested stakeholders can access the official list through the ministry's designated document link.
Stakeholders are advised to check the approved list before purchasing or procuring textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS 1 and SS 1.
