Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic (AAPOLY), Ijebu-Igbo, has emerged as the champions of the men’s football competition at the 2026 Gateway Tertiary Institutions Games (GATIG).
The achievement marks a proud moment for the Polytechnic as its football team secured the championship title at the tertiary institutions sporting competition.
A celebration graphic released for the team announced AAPOLY as the “Champions” of the GATIG 2026 Men’s Football competition, congratulating the institution for its impressive performance.
What Is GATIG?
The Gateway Tertiary Institutions Games (GATIG) is a sporting competition involving tertiary institutions in Ogun State.
The 2026 edition was the 7th edition of the games and featured competitions in several sporting events, including football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, chess, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, badminton and Ayo. The competition brought student-athletes from tertiary institutions across the state together in a celebration of sports, unity and healthy competition.
GATIG was established to promote sporting excellence and provide opportunities for students to participate in competitive sports while also helping to identify and develop young sporting talents.
AAPOLY Makes Its Mark
The victory places Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo, among the institutions making their mark in tertiary-level sports in Ogun State.
The championship is also an achievement that students, management, staff, alumni and supporters of the Polytechnic can celebrate, particularly as sporting competitions such as GATIG provide students with opportunities to showcase talents beyond the classroom.
The importance of sports in tertiary institutions has previously been emphasised by the GATIG Council, with its leadership calling on higher institutions to provide better sporting facilities and create an environment where student-athletes can develop their abilities.
GATIG: More Than Just Football
The 2026 GATIG competition was not limited to football. Student-athletes competed across multiple sporting disciplines, making the event an important platform for sporting development among tertiary institutions in Ogun State.
The organisers have described GATIG as a platform for discovering young talents while promoting unity and healthy rivalry among students.
For AAPOLY, however, the spotlight is now firmly on its men's football team following its successful campaign.
