Lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in three Lagos State-owned universities have suspended their industrial action and are set to return to classrooms with immediate effect.
The development is expected to bring relief to students, parents and other members of the academic community who have been affected by the disruption of academic activities.
The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The unions announced the suspension of the strike on Friday, October 9, 2026, while expressing appreciation to stakeholders who supported their demands and participated in efforts to resolve the dispute.
ASUU Thanks Stakeholders for Supporting Negotiations
In a joint statement signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH, the unions thanked the media, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, students, parents and other stakeholders for their contributions throughout the negotiation process.
According to the unions, their industrial action was driven by demands for improved staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements relating to academic and employment conditions.
The union leaders noted that the support of individuals and organisations helped advance discussions aimed at resolving the issues.
They particularly commended press and broadcasting organisations for their coverage of the dispute, stating that media reports helped communicate the lecturers’ grievances to the public and policymakers.
Civil Society Groups, Traditional Rulers Commended
ASUU also acknowledged the contributions of civil society and pro-worker organisations, including the Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC), and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR).
The unions said these organisations demonstrated solidarity and supported their calls for improved working conditions and quality public tertiary education.
Traditional rulers were also appreciated for their interventions, advice and diplomatic efforts during the dispute. According to the statement, their involvement helped improve communication between the parties at critical stages of the negotiations.
The union further recognised the patience and understanding demonstrated by students and parents throughout the period of the industrial action, acknowledging the sacrifices they made while academic activities were disrupted.
Lecturers Return as Negotiations Continue
With the suspension of the strike, lecturers in the three affected institutions are expected to resume academic activities immediately.
However, the unions stressed that the suspension does not mean all outstanding issues have been fully resolved. They reaffirmed their commitment to continued engagement with the Lagos State Government to ensure the complete resolution of matters relating to staff welfare and other pending agreements.
The union leaders also reiterated their commitment to academic excellence and the provision of quality university education in Lagos State.
The return of lecturers is expected to provide relief to students whose lectures and other academic activities were affected by the industrial action. Students are advised to monitor official announcements from their respective institutions for updates on lecture schedules, examinations and other academic arrangements.
What Students of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH Should Know
Students of Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology should stay informed through official university communication channels as academic activities resume.
Students should confirm any revised lecture timetables, examination dates and departmental schedules with their institutions rather than relying on unverified information circulating on social media.
The development marks an important step towards restoring normal academic activities in the three Lagos State-owned universities, although further discussions are expected as the unions and the state government work towards resolving outstanding issues.
