Makinde made the call in a video shared on his social media platforms on Tuesday, October 6, where he displayed his own PVC and encouraged eligible voters to collect theirs ahead of the elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, had confirmed that nationwide PVC collection would commence on October 9, 2026. The commission also said its National Register of Voters had risen to more than 103 million, following the completion of the latest Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
Makinde Urges Nigerians to Collect Their PVCs
In a statement accompanying his video, Makinde said Nigerians should collect their PVCs so they can participate in the 2027 elections.
“INEC has confirmed that Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) collection commences on 9 October 2026. Please get your PVC so that you can participate in the 2027 election,” the governor said.
In the video, Makinde described the PVC as an important means through which citizens participate in choosing their leaders.
He urged Nigerians to collect their cards regardless of which candidates they intend to support.
INEC Begins Nationwide PVC Collection
The October 9 commencement date follows the completion of key stages of the voter registration process.
According to INEC, more than 10.6 million new applicants participated in the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise. The commission also said the public display of the Preliminary Register of Voters for claims and objections had been completed, alongside the final biometric cleanup of the register.
Registered voters can also check their PVC status and collection centre through INEC's voter services platform.
Makinde's 2027 Presidential Ambition
Makinde's call comes amid his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Oyo State governor is seeking the presidency in 2027 on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), having emerged as the party's presidential candidate in May 2026.
His campaign organisation on Tuesday inaugurated its National Campaign Management Committee in Abuja as preparations for the 2027 presidential election continue.
The campaign organisation has stated a target of between 41 million and 68 million votes for the election.
Makinde was first elected governor of Oyo State in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. He is seeking to succeed President Bola Tinubu at the 2027 presidential election.
INEC Provides Voter Services
INEC's official platform provides registered voters with access to services including voter registration information, PVC status checks, polling-unit identification and other election-related information.
The commission has also provided voter education materials covering voter registration, PVCs, election-day procedures, BVAS, voting rights and other aspects of the electoral process.
As the 2027 election approaches, eligible Nigerians who completed registration are expected to pay attention to INEC's announcements and collect their PVCs at the designated centres.
2027 Presidential Election Date
INEC's current official election information lists January 16, 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The commission has continued to publish election-related information and statutory notices ahead of the 2027 polls.
With PVC collection scheduled to begin nationwide on October 9, voters are now being encouraged to confirm their registration details and obtain their cards ahead of the elections.
