The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Oluwaseun, who was studying Materials Science and Engineering, reportedly died after an emergency was raised at an apartment in the Damico Area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, OAU’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, said the university was informed of the incident at about 1:30 p.m.
According to the university, its Quick Response and Security Team immediately moved to the location, while officers of the Nigeria Police Force ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, were contacted.
Police personnel later joined the university’s security officials at the scene.
The university said Oluwaseun was subsequently taken to the institution’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor examined him and confirmed his death.
Police Begin Investigation
OAU management said it was concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and had handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene over to the police.
The university confirmed that the police had commenced an investigation to establish what happened.
The appropriate student affairs authorities were also notified to provide necessary follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and support of students who may have been affected by the incident.
OAU Vice-Chancellor Condoles With Family
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to Oluwaseun’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed concern for members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the incident.
Management appealed to students and other members of the university community to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information or speculation while the police investigation continues.
The university further encouraged students facing serious emotional distress, relationship challenges, financial difficulties or other personal problems to seek assistance from trusted individuals and the appropriate support structures available within the institution.
Professor Bamire reaffirmed the university management’s commitment to the welfare of students and staff, stressing that no student should feel compelled to face overwhelming challenges alone.
OAU management said the relevant authorities were handling the matter and that any further information would be communicated through official channels when necessary.
