Russian strike on Ukrainian city leaves four dead — Governor

A Russian strike on Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv has killed four people and injured several others, regional authorities said on Tuesday.

Kharkiv governor Oleg Synegubov said on Telegram that the death toll from the attack on the city’s outskirts had risen to four, adding that six people were wounded in the overnight strike.

Footage released by the regional prosecutor’s office showed emergency workers in white helmets searching through the smouldering remains of a building used by postal company Nova Poshta.

Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov also reported that a Russian long-range drone hit a children’s medical facility inside the city, triggering a fire. No casualties were recorded.

The overnight attacks extended beyond Kharkiv, striking other regions including the southern city of Odessa. Residential buildings, a hospital and a kindergarten were damaged, and at least five people were injured in two waves of attacks, according to regional governor Sergiy Lysak.

Russia has intensified daily drone and missile assaults on Ukraine in recent months, repeatedly targeting energy infrastructure and causing power outages during the harsh winter.

Last week’s use of a nuclear-capable Oreshnik ballistic missile by Russia drew condemnation from Ukraine’s allies, including the United States, which described it as a “dangerous and inexplicable escalation”.

Moscow said on Monday that the missile struck an aviation repair plant in the Lviv region and claimed it was launched in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian attempt to attack a residence of President Vladimir Putin — an accusation Kyiv has denied.
