Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has suggested that Nigerians who fail to recognise what she described as the country’s progress may need “Bola Tinubu eyeglasses”.
She made the remark on Friday during the inauguration of the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a grassroots mobilisation group supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
According to the First Lady, developments under the current administration are visible, although some Nigerians may not be acknowledging them.
“So things are happening in Nigeria, except, you know, those who don’t see; maybe we’ll give them some, you know, Bola Tinubu eyeglasses. We are doing that, JigiBola,” she said.
Her comment comes amid ongoing national debates about the government’s performance, economic conditions and the state of public infrastructure.
First Lady References Jigi-Bola Eye-Care Initiative
Mrs Tinubu’s reference to “Jigi-Bola” relates to an eye-care programme introduced by her husband during his tenure as governor of Lagos State in 2001.
The initiative was designed to provide eye-care services, including free eye screening, eyeglasses and surgery, to people who needed them. The programme was later relaunched by the Lagos State Government in 2021.
By invoking the initiative, the First Lady used the idea of improved eyesight as a metaphor for recognising the progress she believes Nigeria is making under President Tinubu’s administration.
Remi Tinubu Highlights Changes at Nigerian Airports
The First Lady also pointed to developments at Nigerian airports as evidence of progress, saying she wanted to be able to travel more quickly.
“I want to get to the airport. I want to travel, you know, so quickly. And you can see our airports too are changing,” she said.
Her remarks highlighted airport improvements as one of the areas in which she believes Nigerians can observe changes.
However, her comments did not specify particular airport projects, the locations involved or the improvements she was referring to.
First Lady Looks Ahead to Leaving Aso Rock in 2031
Mrs Tinubu also spoke about her hope of leaving the Presidential Villa in 2031 and enjoying a better Nigeria in her later years.
“I want to leave Aso Rock, in 2031, by the grace of God, and enter a Nigeria that me as a 70-something-year-old woman will enjoy,” she said.
The statement reflects her expressed hope for a Nigeria where citizens can enjoy improved living conditions in the years ahead.
The year 2031 would follow the 2027 presidential election and the end of the next presidential term, should President Tinubu win re-election and complete that term.
Remi Tinubu Commissions 2027 Campaign Headquarters
During the event, the First Lady formally commissioned the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement and expressed support for her husband’s bid for another term in office.
“So to the glory of God, and for the victory of Mr President come 2027, I hereby formally commission the PBAT door-to-door movement campaign headquarters Abuja,” she said.
She also expressed support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the movement’s convener, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
The inauguration signals the group’s preparations for grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election, with the movement seeking to build support for President Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
