NAFDAC Lists 5 Ways Nigerians Can Report Fake Drugs, Adverse Reactions

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has outlined five ways Nigerians can report suspected fake, substandard and unregistered medicines, report adverse reactions to drugs and access its regulatory services.

The agency urged members of the public to report suspected violations and provide relevant information that could help investigators trace unsafe products, assess potential health risks and improve medicine safety across the country.

In a video shared on Saturday, NAFDAC explained how consumers can use its mobile applications, online platforms, email addresses and telephone lines to submit complaints and seek assistance.

Here are five important ways Nigerians can contact NAFDAC and report concerns about regulated medical products.

1. How to Report Adverse Reactions to Medicines

Nigerians who experience unusual or adverse reactions after taking medicines, receiving vaccines or using other regulated medical products can report the incidents through NAFDAC’s designated channels.

According to the agency, consumers can use the MedSafety application, available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, to submit reports.

Reports can also be sent through the following channels:

NAFDAC encouraged consumers to provide relevant details about the suspected reaction and the product involved to support proper assessment.

Anyone experiencing a severe or potentially life-threatening reaction should seek urgent medical attention rather than wait for a report to be processed.

2. How to Report Fake, Substandard or Unregistered Drugs

Consumers who suspect that a medicine or other regulated medical product is fake, falsified, substandard or unregistered can report it to NAFDAC for investigation.

The agency identified the NAFDAC Greenbook application as one of the channels available for reporting suspected unsafe products. The application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Other reporting options include:

Consumers should provide as much useful information as possible, such as the product name, batch number, manufacturer details, purchase location and photographs of the packaging, where available.

People who suspect a product is unsafe should avoid using it until they have obtained appropriate professional guidance.

3. How to Check if a Product Is Registered with NAFDAC

Before purchasing or using a regulated product, consumers can check its registration status through NAFDAC’s Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System.

The agency directs consumers to its registration portal:

https://registration.nafdac.gov.ng

Users can search for a product using its NAFDAC registration number and review the information available on the portal.

Checking registration details can help consumers identify discrepancies and raise concerns about products whose registration status cannot be confirmed.

However, consumers should remember that a registration number printed on a package is not, by itself, proof that the product is genuine. Where the number or product details appear suspicious, they should seek clarification from NAFDAC.

4. How to Notify NAFDAC About Product Recalls

NAFDAC has also reminded regulated stakeholders that they must notify the agency when recalling products and follow the applicable recall procedures.

According to the agency, recall notifications should be addressed to the Director-General through the Director of Post-Marketing Surveillance.

The information required may include:

  • Product name and registration number

  • Name of the manufacturer or marketing authorisation holder

  • Product expiry date

  • Batch or lot number

  • Reason for the recall

  • Product distribution details

  • Proposed recall actions

Notifications may be submitted electronically through the agency’s designated post-marketing surveillance channel or as hard copies at the nearest NAFDAC office.

These procedures are intended to help the agency assess recall issues and coordinate appropriate action involving affected products.

Regulated businesses should confirm the current submission requirements and designated electronic channel directly with NAFDAC.

5. How to Contact NAFDAC for Enquiries

Members of the public who need information about NAFDAC’s services or clarification on regulatory matters can use the agency’s general contact channels.

The contact details provided in the report are:

Consumers can use these channels to ask questions about regulated products, reporting procedures and other agency services.

NAFDAC Urges Nigerians to Report Suspicious Products

NAFDAC stressed that public participation is important in identifying potentially dangerous products and investigating suspected violations.

The agency encouraged anyone making a report to provide relevant information and supporting evidence that could assist its investigation.

It explained that reports can help identify safety concerns, trigger investigations into products and improve regulatory services.

The message to Nigerians is straightforward: verify product information, seek help when necessary and report suspected fake or unsafe medicines through appropriate official channels.

By reporting concerns promptly, consumers can help strengthen medicine safety and protect other members of the public.
