The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria against issuing admission letters that could be mistaken for the Board’s official admission documents.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, reportedly gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.
According to the Registrar, JAMB is statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
JAMB Says Official Admission Letters Must Follow CAPS Process
Prof. Aina expressed concern that candidates could be misled into believing they had secured valid admission when they received documents issued by institutions that appeared to offer them admission.
He urged institutions involved in the practice to desist, stressing that they also have a responsibility to ensure candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents through the approved process.
The Registrar reportedly recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that admissions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
He maintained that institutions should not substitute their own admission letters for the official JAMB admission letter issued after a candidate has accepted an admission offer on CAPS.
Admission Outside CAPS Could Affect NYSC Mobilisation
The warning has important implications for candidates preparing to begin their tertiary education, particularly those who may assume that an admission letter issued by their institution is sufficient proof of a valid admission.
According to the statement attributed to the Registrar, admission processed through CAPS is recognised for official purposes, including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Candidates are therefore advised to confirm that their admission status is properly reflected on JAMB CAPS and to obtain the required official admission documentation.
What Admission Seekers Should Do
Candidates who have received admission offers from universities, polytechnics or colleges of education should take the following steps:
- Check their admission status through the official JAMB e-Facility portal at https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/.
- Log in to CAPS to confirm whether an admission offer has been made.
- Follow the official instructions for accepting the offer.
- Obtain their JAMB admission letter after completing the required acceptance process.
- Contact JAMB or their institution through official channels if there is a discrepancy between their school admission status and their CAPS record.
Candidates should avoid assuming that an admission offer displayed only on an institutional portal automatically confirms that all JAMB admission requirements have been completed.
Final Advice to Candidates
JAMB's reported warning highlights the importance of verifying admission offers and ensuring that all required procedures are completed through the appropriate channels.
Prospective students should confirm their admission status on CAPS, obtain the necessary official documents and resolve any discrepancies before proceeding with other admission-related requirements.
An admission offer from your institution and your official JAMB admission record should be properly aligned. Always verify your status before making assumptions about the validity of your admission.
